While the fish with the common name crested bigscale in Alaskan waters had formerly been identified as ''P. crassiceps'', it is now believed that Alaskan crested bigscales are actually ''Poromitra curilensis'', and that ''P. crassiceps'' is restricted to the Atlantic ocean.〔M.S.
